What a repair involves
The operator starts by testing the electrical supply, pressure switch, pressure tank pre-charge and control box (for 3-wire pumps). Many "dead pump" calls turn out to be above-ground components.
If the problem is down the well, the pump and drop pipe are pulled — often with a pump hoist truck — to inspect the motor, wiring splice and check valve.

Repair vs. replace
- Repair when the pump is under ~10 years old and the fault is a switch, control box, wiring or tank.
- Replace when the motor has failed, the pump is 10–15+ years old, or it has needed repeated pulls.
- Since pulling the pump is a major part of labor, replacing an old pump while it's already out often saves a second visit.
Well pump repair FAQ
How much does well pump repair cost in Reno?
A diagnostic visit typically runs $150–250. Common repairs like pressure switches, control boxes or wiring typically run $300–1,500. Final quote on site.
How long do well pumps last?
Submersible pumps commonly last 8–15 years depending on water quality, sediment, cycling and how hard they work.
Should I repair or replace my well pump?
If the pump is older than about 10 years, has failed before, or repair costs approach half of replacement, replacement is usually the better value.
Can I keep using water while the pump short cycles?
Limit use. Short cycling wears the motor quickly — often a waterlogged pressure tank or failed switch is the cause.
